08.08.08

seems like the perfect day to highlight the most important drum machine of all time, the Roland TR-808. This drum machine kinda sucks, to be honest, but it was cheap and thus was co-opted by early rap producers to define the sound of early hip-hop. It's use has spiralled out of control, and you can hear it in all styles of music now. Here's a playlist of tracks that heavily use the TR-808, from Marvin Gaye to Phil Collins to Run DMC to early techno to Sublime.
